a gender role is socially defined stereotypical set of norms associated with human males or females, in a given system (social group).

therefore a 'man' is stereotypically masculine, a 'woman' is stereotypically feminine.

in contrast with sex, gender (role) refers to an individual's psychological type - acquired thru experience.

a human of any biological sex can be viewed as either masculine, feminine,or a conglomerate of both (aie, ndrogynous), depending on the particular society's norms/stereotypes - or those of the individual critic.
